A new fun interactive county wide project

#mackidcalhounrocks

Let me start by saying, my best friend and I love geocaching. We bring our husbands, she brings her dog, we have a blast! Unfortunately not all caches are in kid friendly places so our geocaching dates are very few and far between these days. Oliver loves to hunt and explore and find so I wanted a Summer project that would not only be kid friendly but family focused. That in mind and my love of the cache hunt and #mackidcalhounrocks was born! I hope to see this grow into a HUGE county wide project kids and adults of all ages can get involved with and have fun! Hopefully this project will bring your family to new places and exercise that creative side!
The concept behind #mackidrocks is as easy as 1. 2. 3, but should bring hours of fun and enjoyment and family time for everyone! 1- Find some rocks. 2. Paint , seal, and label your rocks. 3. Hide your rocks in fun family friendly places for other families to find! See! Easy! Now let’s get into some details so you know how you can get your family in on this fun summer adventure!

Rock painting and hiding tips- smooth sandstone works great. Look at waterways for smooth rocks and unique shapes. Let the rock talk to you!! Please refrain from borrowing rocks from other folks landscaping - if all else fails let me know and I can hook you up with a few free rocks.
Clean the rocks and let dry - this helps the paint stick. Use acrylic, oil, enamel paints or markers if you like. Acrylic dries the fastest and a 2oz bottle will last and last. They run from .50 to 1.97 a bottle.

A product called a "Sharpie pen" (not marker) can be found in most office supply areas. I have used this with success to write "#mackidcalhounrocks" on the back of the stone. Hopefully this will encourage  people to search facebook and instagram for the project and get involved! It will also work over paint for fine details. Remember Family friendly art!

After creating your unique art - seal the rock on all sides. An inexpensive sealer is Rust-oleum crystal clear enamel. Usually under $4. This will seal a lot of rocks!
We will also be holding some rock painting parties in the near future

On hiding - safety first - don't hide them where you have to climb, crawl or where someone could trip on them. Hiding in plain sight is the most fun. High traffic pedestrian areas are great.
So if you find a rock - leave it, re-hide it, keep it but most important post a picture using the hastag #mackidcalhounrocks so we can all enjoy the art work of others!! We’ll be featuring our favorite photos weekly in our newsletter and on our FB and Instagram! Rock on!! Mac Kid Calhoun Rocks!!
